Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), is in for a big tussle for the seat of power at Aso Rock come February 2019 after 39 opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party and a faction of the APC, signed a Memorandum of Understanding and form a coalition against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Known as the Coalition of Political Party (CUPP), the new party also comprises the KOWA Party, Labour Party, Alliance for Democracy among others, and is expected to present a single candidate who is expected to be the main opposition to the incumbent in the general elections early next year.
The MoU creating the coalition party was signed by Buba Galadima of the R-APC; the faction breaking away from the ruling APC, with the hope to “rescue the nation from further decline,” while Galadima described the incumbent’s presidency as a monumental disaster.
Recall that Buhari and the APC signed a similar understanding to form a coalition against then incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP, ahead of the 2015 general elections which swung in Buhari’s way eventually.
NYSC to investigate forged exemption certificate allegation against Kemi Adeosun
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has released a statement to address the messy controversy surrounding Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, and the allegation that her NYSC exemption certificate was forged.
The strong allegation was made in a Nigerian publication which reported that the NYSC had been coy on releasing details of Adeosun’s exemption status, with the NYSC stating Adeosun did apply for exemption in the wake of the ruffling allegation.
However, the NYSC through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Adeyemi Adenike, stated that it would investigate the origin of Kemi Adeosun’s exemption certificate to ascertain if it was issued by the agency or forged as strongly claimed.
Kemi Adeosun and the presidency meanwhile have remained silent on the controversial issue which could lead to the Finance Minister’s resignation if true.
