In the first dozen minutes after Kylie Jenner revealed the birth of her daughter, websites struggled to load due to the heavy surge in user traffic. Social media applications, especially Snapchat and Twitter, went into overdrive.
I judge you if this opening paragraph is the first you’re hearing of Kylie’s baby. If the recent Calvin Klein shoot she appeared in with her sisters wasn’t a big enough hint, then there’s really nothing I can do for you. Oh yes, you’re judged!
This latest chapter in the book of Kardashian revelations was not only a baby (girl) announcement, it was also a confirmation of Kylie being pregnant since last year. And the fact that she kept everyone guessing on whether the pregnancy was true or just a rumour further proves the Kardashian family’s hold on the social media.
It also highlights the growing influence Kylie now has and to put a measure on it, the 20-year-old make-up mogul and new mother’s influence just bumped shoulders with that of her big sister, Kim, as she continues to ‘threaten’ Kim’s stake as the jewel in the House of Kards.
For one, it’s through Kylie’s baby announcement the world got a first look at Chicago West – a baby Kim had through surrogacy, meaning the opportunity to keep the world guessing about a pregnancy was not really going to work for Kim because there would too many people involved in the process to keep it a secret. Kylie was able to pull this off by having her own baby.
Another point is the new dimension the baby’s arrival and existence brings to Kylie’s already well-storied life. She’s got a little over one hundred million followers on Instagram and 24 million more on Twitter, with millions more set to now join over time thanks to the baby. Let’s not even mention Snapchat. On Twitter alone, two tweets from her – one with a photo of her introducing us to the baby and the other a link to a YouTube video giving us a peek into the last nine months – each garnered at least half a million in total engagement within the first two hours of being posted.
Yet another point proving Kylie’s growing influence is how the birth of her baby was still able to get people’s full attention despite the announcement coming on the same weekend as the Super Bowl and the drama of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham (on the global front). On the home front, it was on the same weekend as the Big Brother Naija premier and the home-based Eagles totally getting whooped by Morocco out there at the CHAN ’18 final in Casablanca and it still dominated news blogs.
It’s the home stretch now and honourable mention goes to Travis Scott, the baby daddy. Momager, Kris Jenner is probably trying hard to figure just how he’s gonna fit in the big picture now that there’s the new baby, Chicago West and Khloe’s baby coming through in a few. Her multi-million dollar headache, not mine.
That said, it remains to be seen the frequency of Kylie’s online presence now that we (oh yes, it’s ‘we’ guys. It was ‘our’ pregnancy) have welcomed a baby girl. But be sure the photoshoot with the baby is coming, the Kylie cosmetics will stay popping and we will still be Keeping up with the Kardashians when Kylie becomes the new queen… in time. In the end, the Kardashians win yet again.
