The president, Muhammadu Buhari, will jet out to the United Kingdom, “at the doctor’s request”, and has assured us he will be back in Nigeria by Saturday.
Firstly, Buhari can take all the time away from the country he wants. It’s not like his presence here makes the situation any better and his absence can’t make it any more worse than it is already.
Secondly, despite his wife pointing out that the Aso Rock hospital wasn’t in the best condition (to put it lightly), Daddy BuBu obviously has been unable to get anticipatory approval of funds for the hospital’s upgrade in the months that have followed. But yes, let’s get such approval for warplanes which would not even be in our possession until 2020.
Let’s even leave Aso Rock hospital, there’s absolutely NO hospital – public or private – in Nigeria that Buhari can go to for a medical checkup or doctor consultation or alone time even (Nigeria can be that stressful)? That’s just how bad the health sector has become.
Bringing us to the most annoying part of all this – “at the doctor’s request”. That doctor better have four heads and five medical degrees to be able to summon an entire country’s president at a time said president’s people are being slaughtered like herds.
However, being healthy should never be taken for granted so, as stated at the beginning of this post, Daddy BuBu can take all the time in the world. Safe journey Sir. If only the average Nigerian could enjoy the luxury of having a doctor who has their time to the point of requesting to see them.
Rather, what the average Nigerian makes do with is a doctor who is either choked with a deluge of patients to tend to in quick time, or a doctor who is too expensive to even be consulted, or a doctor who is on strike.
Is it a sin when Nigerians request a buoyant health sector in their own country? If the people in the corridor of power prefer getting medical treatment in the overseas, no problem. Go. Just so long adequate medical services are made to be within the reach of those who are not rich.
“At the doctor’s request”… *long hiss
