I was talking to a friend over the weekend and I tried to explain to her why I don’t ask cab men where I am during a trip. I just use Google Maps and I’m good to go. This is one of the ways I try to stay safe in unfamiliar environments.
Moving to a new place, whether it be a new neighborhood or city, can be really exciting and scary. Imagine moving to Lagos from Jos, the experience can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know anyone. When you are in a new place, you have to make sure you’re safe at all times, especially females. In a new environment, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
1.Do your research
You need to find out about where you’re moving to, especially if it’s a new neighborhood. This way you will have a little idea about what goes on there and how you can stay safe.
2. Always be alert
You should always be alert when you go out. See if anyone is following you, if a car is moving slowly behind your or if there’s generally any suspicious behavior around you. Learn to hold on tight to your bag/ phone so no one snatches it. You will be surrounded by new strangers who may later turn out to be friends but if your intuition tells your they’re sketchy it’s best to stay away.
3.Secure your home
Make sure you lock all your doors at all times. Invest your time in proper security measures, especially if you’re living alone. Make friends with your neighbors so you can always watch out for each other and make sure your most valuable items are locked up in a safer place.
4. Blend in
In a new city, the trick is to look confident wherever you’re going to. Never look like you do not know where you are or where you’re going to because it’ll be easier to get attacked if you look lost and helpless. Use your GPS apps as much as possible and try to let other people know where you are or where you’re headed.
