So the 12th Headies Awards took place on Saturday and is it ever a complete Headies if screws don’t get loose in some people’s heads and brew controversies?
That’s how TV host, Ebuka, announced Yemi Alade as the winner of the Best Performer award, only for Tiwa Savage’s name to show up on the display as the winner instead. Curious, but it was no joke. Now, we’re at a divide over who truly won the award.

On a night unfit for jokes, Instagram comedian, Ebiye, should have kept his snappy fingers away from his phone when Aramide came on stage to collect the award for Best Alternative Song.
Alas, his fingers snapped away and pretty much rubbished Aramide, saying she “probably f*&ked” to get named as winner ahead of Adekunle Gold, Johnny Drille, and Reminisce who were also nominated in the category.
Dumb stuff, Ebiye. You should know better.
Also, Reekado Banks winning the Hip Hop World Revelation award ahead of Adekunle Gold, Niniola, and Mr. Eazi raised a few eyebrows.
Away from the controversies, though, and funnily, there was none to court when Mayorkun was named this edition’s Next Rated winner ahead of Maleek Berry, Dice Ailes, Johnny Drille, and Zoro.
That category usually stirred great drama in previous editions but this year, not so much. Besides, each artiste nominated this year deserved it in some way so congrats to them all.
Meanwhile, the big winners of the night were Wizkid with four awards as well as Simi and Davido with three awards apiece, while M.I Abaga got two awards. Other winners include Tiwa Savage for Best Collabo (“Malo” with Wizkid), Reminisce for Best Rap Album, Omawumi for Best Vocal Performance and 2Baba for Best Reggae/Dancehall.
Falz and Adekunle Gold were the biggest names to not get a single award on the night while Johnny Drille also failed to get an award despite four nominations – which he was delighted for nonetheless and the Mavin Records artiste can look forward to more based on what we’ve seen of his talent.
