Considering the massive, MASSIVE success of Black Panther, Hollywood should really start thinking of doing more movies with black superheroes of African origin. We know there are not a lot of them, but some of the few that exist do really deserve their own stand-alone movies. If the success of Black Panther has taught us anything it is that the world is ready to pay to see our many different cultures (and juju) on full display. So, just in case anybody needs help or advice on which African superhero to bring to the big screen next, we have some really cool suggestions:
BLACK PANTHER (MARVEL COMICS)
REAL NAME: SHURI
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Wakanda (fictional)
ABILITIES: Animorphism. Genius-level intellect. Expert martial artist. Necromancy. Super speed. Stone skin. Use of high-tech equipment and weapons including vibranium uniform. Enhanced agility, durability, endurance, reflexes, senses, speed, stamina and strength.
According to the comic books, Shuri takes over as the Black Panther after her brother, T’challa is critically injured in battle and cannot carry on with his black panther duties. What we want is a full length feature film that tells every detail of this story. Imagine the awesomeness that would be a Shuri Black Panther movie! I mean, we already have the perfect actor for the role. If only we could make this happen by sheer force of will. We really, really hope that Marvel has this movie on their list of ‘movies we absolutely must make.”
BATWING (DC COMICS)
REAL NAME: David Zavimbe
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Congo
ABILITIES: Master martial artist. Flight via suit’s wings. Arsenal of weapons and high-tech gadgets. Skilled detective.
Ever wondered what it would be like if Batman were to operate in an African country? The Batwing comic series answered that question for us. Well, sort of. With David Zavimbe, a Congolese police officer, as Batwing, the Batman series was extended to the African continent. He basically does what Batman does, except he does it in Congo. Many people think of superheroes as a purely American concept but Batwing’s story is one of the few story lines that take place outside America, so it would be very exciting to see how superhero-ism fares outside of the USA and especially in an African country! We would absolutely pay money to see that depicted.
STORM (MARVEL COMICS)
REAL NAME: Ororo Munroe
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Kenya
ABILITIES: Psionic ability to manipulate weather patterns over vast areas. Control atmospheric pressure. Temperature modification. Ecological empathy. Excellent marksman. Expert thief. Flight. Skilled hand-to-hand combatant.
As the first major female character of African descent in comic books and one of the most powerful mutants on earth, Storm should be in front of the line to get her own standalone movie. She is one of the more famous X-men, mainly because of her regular feature in the X-men movie/TV franchise series, and is even one of the mutants in the franchise’s reboot (as seen in X-men Apocalypse). Seeing as Dark Phoenix is getting her own movie and with the whole female empowerment thing going on in Hollywood, we figure now is as good a time as any for Marvel’s most important female superhero to get her own movie.
VIXEN (DC COMICS)
REAL NAME: Mari Jiwe McCabe/Amaya Jiwe
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Zambesi (fictional)
ABILITIES: Animal imitation via the Tantu Totem: Vixen possesses the innate ability to make direct contact with the Earth’s morphogenetic field. This contact allows her to draw upon the abilities of any animal that has ever lived on the planet and mimic its abilities, thus giving her a variety of superhuman powers.
Although Vixen has only appeared as part of one team or the other in the comic books, (including as a member of the Justice League and the Suicide Squad) we think that this character has a great enough origin story and story arch to merit her own movie. There has been a previous attempt to make a movie about the first African female DC superhero, but plans fell through. This would be the perfect time for that project to be restarted.
MIDNIGHT (MARVEL COMICS)
REAL NAME: M’NAI
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: an unamed African country
ABILITIES: Expert in martial arts and stealth. Superhuman strength, durability, agility, and reflexes. Ability to travel and survive vacuum of space.
A super villain of African origin raised/ trained in China by one of fiction’s greatest villains? The real question is, how come there isn’t already a movie about that?! Midnight’s story arch is one of the most interesting, multi-cultural story lines in the Marvel comic universe; it is also one of the most brutal. Midnight’s story has all the ingredients to make a great movie; an intriguing origin story, a complex, layered lead character and a message of hope and transformation, not to mention vengeance, betrayal and a healthy dose of family drama. Hollywood, please we are waiting.
