Creativity is one of the most useful super-powers in the world today. You need to be creative to do everything. Whatever job it is you are doing, your creative juices need to constantly be flowing.
The thing about creativity though, is that the levels spike and drop; some days you are not as creativity as you were the previous day or you run out of good ideas. This is bad, especially if your job fundamentally requires you to be creative all the time.
Sometimes, this dearth of creativity comes as a result of bad habits – things we do that dry up our juices and leave us with less and less creativity than before. We are all guilty of killing our creativity in one way or the other and here is a list of things that can cause that to happen:
1. OVER-THINKING IT
Over-thinking things clouds your judgment. It’s not okay to jump to conclusions when it comes to being creative but if you think about it and it seems like your idea is good enough then just go ahead with it. Over thinking only makes you question your bright ideas and stops you from executing them.
2. THINKING THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE ANSWER
The ‘one answer syndrome’ keeps you inside a box. You should understand that there is more than one answer to a problem. You have to open up your mind to other possibilities before reaching a final decision.
3. FEAR OF FAILURE
It’s okay to make mistakes and fail; it only makes you better when you re-do what you failed at. The key is not to focus on the failure before it comes. It’s distracting and makes you lose focus.
4. COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS
The reign of social media has almost legitimized comparison and envy. Looking at what other people are doing and comparing their successes against your failures is not only a bad idea, it is also very dangerous to your mental health. Creativity comes in different ways for each of us so stop trying to be like someone else.
5. TAKING CRITICISM PERSONALLY
Some people don’t handle criticism well. You feel the person is picking on you or just does not like you which is not even the case. Taking criticism well makes you better and helps you think of better ideas.
6. LACK OF CONFIDENCE
Don’t focus on what people may think of your idea. Confidence in yourself is very important because not every one will think like you but you can convince them about your idea.
7. BEING TOO LOGICAL
Being too logical is bad for creativity. Yes, logic is good because it keeps you from being impractical, but sometimes you have to let your imagination take over.
